What is #PDO and #PGI? Why is it Important for #Wine Consumers to Know? There are several schemes to successfully ensure the quality of #Garnacha wines. Some of these include Geographical Indications (GI), and more specifically under that umbrella, Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). The main difference between these is that PDOs guarantees that the grapes come exclusively from the geographical area where the wine is made. Whereas Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) means that at least 85% of the grapes used have to come exclusively from the geographical area where the wine is actually made. This system, that involves multiple quality tests, was created by the European Union to help consumers by informing them about the specific features of the products, and to protect their geographical appellations specific features.¿Did you know that wine with a Protected Designation of Origin continues to be the most acquired prominently (Food + Hospitality), representing almost 57% of the volume and 73% of the total value in 2023? (Source: OEMV).Some examples of these kinds of certifications are PDO Campo de Borja, PDO Cariñena, Calatayud Denominación de Origen, PDO Terra Alta or PDO Priorat. If you recognize these logos you know you are choosing the best quality!
