Hilton’s New Travel with Purpose Report Shows Significant Progress Toward 2030 Goals (2024)

Hilton’s New Travel with Purpose Report Shows Significant Progress Toward 2030 Goals (1)

With 7,530 properties under its watch, 6,587 of which are franchised, Hilton’s impact on the environment is significant. Hilton’s progress toward reducing that impact was just reported in its 2023 Hilton Travel with Purpose Report.

In 2018, Hilton set its Travel with Purpose 2030 goals. The goals closely align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and include emissions-reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and aligned with the Paris Climate Agreement.

LightStay, Hilton’s ESG management system, helps track, analyze, and report environmental and social impact at each of its hotels and corporate offices, as well as its progress. Hilton Supply Management, partnerships, the Hilton Global Foundation, team members, hotel owners, customers, and the communities where its hotels are located all help push Hilton toward its goals.

Progress in Energy Management, Water Use, Landfill Waste

Hilton’s report is rich with examples of progress, but here are some notable ones that stand out:

  • Achieved a 45.1 percent reduction in carbon emissions intensity among its managed hotels and a 25.1 percent reduction in carbon emissions intensity among its franchised hotels (2008 baseline).
  • Reduced its water use intensity among its managed hotels by 26.5 percent (2008 baseline).
  • Lowered its landfilled waste intensity by 63.7 percent among its managed hotels, surpassing its initial 2030 50 percent reduction target (2008 baseline).
  • With more than 25 million reported volunteer hours since 2017, Hilton has far exceeded its 2030 goal of 10 million volunteer hours.
  • Hilton developed Sustainable Design Checklists for owners and developers to support informed decisions on sustainability. One example: Consider site selection to reduce biodiversity risk.
  • All Hilton properties worldwide are in the process of completing a full transition to interior and exterior energy–efficient LED lighting.
  • Seventy percent of Hilton hotels provide guests access to hydration stations or have an on-site bottling plant.
  • By the end of 2023, Hilton properties were required to transition to full-size shampoo, conditioner, and soap amenities, eliminating single-use miniature bottles and reducing bars of soap.
  • All Hilton hotels in New Zealand currently partner with Beyond Skin Deep to turn soap bottles into plastic posts for agricultural and horticultural use.
  • As of year-end 2023, corporate leadership was 42 percent women and 20 percent ethnically diverse.
  • In 2023, the Hilton Global Foundation granted more than $4.4M to organizations in its communities making a lasting impact in three core funding areas: Environmental Sustainability, Career Development and Community Resilience.
  • With the support of the Hilton Global Foundation, more than 308,000 pounds of waste was diverted from landfill in 2023, 58,800 trees were planted and nearly 22,000 acres of land was restored.

In the introduction to the report, Hilton President & CEO Christopher J. Nassetta said, “These highlights are just the tip of the iceberg of our Travel with Purpose strategy.”
