  3. Lay the dumpling wrappers on a board. Have a small bowl of water nearby.
  4. Place one teaspoon of mixture in the middle of each pot sticker wrapper. Dip your finger into the water bowl and run it all the way around the edge of the wrapper.

  6. Find a pot your bamboo steamer will fit in. Fill with about two inches of water. Turn on high and bring to a boil.
  7. *line the bamboo steamer with lettuce, kale leaves or parchment paper while the water is coming to a boil. Set the pot stickers on the lettuce in a single layer. Do not overcrowd.

Ways to cook Pot Stickers

  • cooking in a bamboo steamer - it takes 15-20 minutes to cook with a bamboo steamer. Be sure to line the bottom of the steamer with lettuce or spray with non-stick coating to prevent them from sticking)
  • cooking in a pressure cooker/instant pot - 7 minutes on steam (spray with rack with non-stick coating)
  • pan-fried version - adding a small amount of oil to a pan searing the bottom until they are golden brown, then adding some chicken stock or and finish by steaming. For step-by-step directions check out this post from Take Two Tapas - Grandma Machie's Gyoza Pan Fried Dumplings

I used bamboo steamer. I think this is a great cooking method and the steamer doubles as great decor and server on the tapas table when you're getting ready for a party!

FAQ's

Why are they called Pot Stickers?

They are called pot stickers because if you don't line your steamer with greens or spray with cooking oil....they will definitely stick to the pot!

What are pot stickers made of?

The stuffing is usually pork or chopped shrimp with shredded vegetables.

What types of sauces can you serve with potstickers.

Pot stickers can be served with a variety of sauces including Citrus Ponzu Dipping Sauce or Plum BBQ Sauce. Both are amazing!

What is the difference between pot stickers and dumplings?

The difference between pot stickers and dumplings is potstickers have a thin wrapping where dumplings are made with a dough.

Deb's tips

  • Don't overfill the dumplings, the wrappers will burst during the cooking process.
  • Spice ordinary soy sauce with sriracha, chili oil, sweet chili sauce or grated ginger for more flavor.
  • This makes a ton of potstickers. If you're cooking them in batches, cover extra dumplings with plastic wrap until you're ready to steam them.

Variations

Green cabbage or Napa cabbage are both great additions to the dumpling recipe. You can use square or round wrappers.

Storage

Refrigerate - any leftover dumplings can be refrigerated up to three days. Store in an airtight container.

Freezer - Freeze any uncooked pot stickers. Place on platter and freeze individually. When they are completely frozen. Place in ziplock bag and return to freezer.

Here are some of my favorite tasty appetizers!

  • Teriyaki Meatballs - easy to make and so much flavor!
  • Shrimp Chop Suey is a quick and easy recipe that's perfect for an easy weeknight meal!
  • Asian Turkey Sliders - so darn tasty and fun!
  • Celery Stuffed with Cream Cheese - I eat this all the time, it's the best snack!

Serving suggestions

  • Serve this with Egg Roll in a Bowl and a large platter of fried rice.
  • Chicken Teriyaki Ramen or Teriyaki Noodles would also be excellent; both are quick and easy to make!
