FAQs

How do you thicken BBQ sauce in an Instant Pot? ›

After the bbq chicken is done cooking, you will likely need to thicken the barbeque sauce since you added water to get it up to pressure. To do this, just make a slurry of water and arrowroot powder or tapioca flour and water.

How much liquid do I add to Instant Pot for chicken? ›

This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled, using either a 6-quart or 8-quart Instant Pot. I suggest not scaling three liquid up at the same rate as the protein… for 2 pounds of chicken, I still use 1 cup of liquid; and for 3 pounds of chicken, 2 cups of liquid is sufficient.

How much chicken can you put in an Instant Pot? ›

You can make up to 5 pounds of chicken breast in the Instant Pot at once, if yours is 6 quarts like mine. I usually stick to no more than 4 pounds, as 5 pounds doesn't always cook evenly.

What can I add to BBQ sauce to make it thicker? ›

You can use either flour or cornstarch to thicken BBQ sauce. Just mix together 2 tbsp (16 g) of flour and ¼ cup (62.5 mL) of water, or combine 1 tbsp (9 g) of cornstarch with 1 tbsp (15 mL) of water. Continue mixing the thickener until there are no lumps of flour or cornstarch.

How do you thicken BBQ sauce without cornstarch? ›

You might try 2TB Flour and a 1/4 cup cold water and mix thoroughly before adding to the BBQ sauce. Depending on the type of BBQ sauce you are wanting, other ingredients can be added as well to some mixtures to add a bit of thickness, such as; tomato paste, or honey.

Is it better to slow cook or pressure cook chicken breast? ›

Chicken breasts are a less ideal choice for slow cooking. One reason why you shouldn't make boneless chicken breasts in a slow cooker is because they're too low in fat to withstand cooking for a long time. Your final product will likely come out tough and chewy.

Does chicken need to be submerged in pressure cooker? ›

One is having the chicken submerged in the liquid and the other option is placing the chicken on top of the trivet. Submerging the chicken method is great for shredding in enchiladas, etc; while cooking the chicken on the trivet creates a firmer chicken that can be sliced for salads, etc.

Can you overcook chicken in a Instapot? ›

While all cuts of chicken are fair game for the Instant Pot, thighs are the most forgiving. Because chicken breast is so lean, just a couple of extra minutes of cook time turns them from juicy to overcooked and dry.

What to do if my barbecue sauce is too thin? ›

To thicken your BBQ sauce, you can add ingredients such as cornstarch, flour, or tomato paste. Start with a small amount and gradually add more until you reach your desired thickness. Stir the sauce frequently as it thickens to avoid lumps forming.

How do you thicken a sauce that's too watery? ›

Use one tablespoon cornstarch mixed with one tablespoon cold water (aka a cornstarch slurry) for each cup of medium-thick sauce. Thoroughly mix the cornstarch and water together, then pour into your sauce. Cook and stir over medium heat until thickened and bubbly.

What is the best way to thicken sauce that has become too watery? ›

The most readily available sauce-thickener is flour. For a too-thin sauce, try adding a slurry (equal parts flour and water, whisked together) or beurre manie (equal parts softened butter and flour, kneaded together to form a paste)—both are ideal thickeners for rich and creamy sauces, such as steak sauce recipes.

How do you thicken BBQ sauce in a slow cooker? ›

In a small prep bowl, add 2 tbsp water to 1 tbsp cornstarch and mix until smooth. Add cornstarch mixture to BBQ sauce in pot, whisking until well integrated. Continue to whisk until sauce thickens slightly. (Repeat cornstarch process for thicker sauce.)
