with child of the Holy Ghost--It was, of course, the fact only that was discovered; the explanation of the fact here given is the Evangelist's own. That the Holy Ghost is a living conscious Person is plainly implied here, and is elsewhere clearly taught (Ac 5:3, 4, &c.): and that, in the unity of the Godhead, He is distinct both from the Father and the Son, is taught with equal distinctness (Mt 28:19; 2Co 13:14). He begins by calling Jesus the Son ofDavid, who was the greatest king of Israel, making this a royaldescent and proving Jesus to be the king of the Jews.Matthew goes on and records His virgin birth having beenconceived by the Holy Spirit. He had no human father by bloodbut He was the Son of God by blood descent. Joseph wasconsidering what he should do regarding her pregnancy and anangel appeared to him in a dream calling him son of David, andencouraging him that all that happened was true and to be strongand marry her. He was to name his son Jesus, for He shall savehis people from their sins. Matthew is quick to mention that thevirgin birth of Christ was in direct fulfillment of the Word ofthe prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 7:14. Joseph did as was commandedhim and knew her not until after she gave birth to her firstbornSon and called His name Jesus.

Interesting Notes:Matthew mentions four women in his genealogy: Tamar, Rahab,Ruth, Bathsheeba who were all associated with some sort ofimmorality. Tamar (incest), Rahab (harlotry), Ruth (a descendantof Moab who committed incest) and Bathsheba (adultery). Christ'sgreatness was in Himself not his geneaology.Women were never mentioned in Jewish genealogies. Matthew begins the genealogy by calling Jesus the Son of Davidmaking it a royal genealogy because Jesus is the King andrightful heir to David's throne. This could not have happenedthrough Mary's genealogy alone.Matthew's genealogy proves Jesus was the Son of Abraham. Godpromised that Abraham's "seed" would bless the whole world.All the Jewish genealogical records were lost in the firstcentury with the destruction of the Temple. No Jew today couldrightfully claim to be a descended of king David.There is no example of history that records such a historicalgenealogy. There is no logical explanation except that Godprepared the Jewish people, and their scrupulous keeping ofgenealogical records, to preserve an accurate account which HisSon would make an entrance into this world.Matthew divides the Old Testament from Abraham to Jesus as three14 generation periods.
