How do skate shoes fit? ›

Your skate shoes should fit snug and secure. That being said, you don't want your toe to be touching the end of your shoe. When you skate and try tricks—especially when you don't land on the board—your foot will slide forward. If your shoes are too tight, it's going to be painful on your toes.

Breaking in can take anywhere between several days to a couple of weeks of regular wear, depending on the shoe material. To protect your feet and expedite the shoe break-in process, try heating up your shoes with a blow dryer, putting them on ice, massaging the shoes, and using gel pads or cushion inserts.

It takes time to break in a new pair of figure skates. It is best to break the skates in over several skating sessions. You will need to skate in the new boots for a total of at least six, but up to eight, hours.

Sure-Grip skates tend to run slightly big, so for skaters who are a half-size in shoes, we recommend they size DOWN half a size as opposed to UP.

A proper fit for hockey skates should fit 1-1.5 sizes smaller than your street shoes. Your toes should barely touch the toe cap, while having no more than 1/4 inch of space in the heel. When you're finished lacing up your skates, they should feel snug with the foot resting flat on the footbed.

It's normal to have your little toe and the fourth toe close to the edge of the insole or completely off the edge. Signs your skates are not the right fit include very little space at the toe, zero space at the toe and having your toes hang over the front edge, and the third toe hanging off the side of the insole.

Avoid the temptation to embark on an extended skating session the first time you wear your new skates. Instead, break in your skates gradually. Start with shorter sessions, allowing your feet to adjust to the new contours and providing time for any pressure points to become apparent.
