VENTURA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE / MOORPARK POLICE DEPARTMENT2+ weeks agoAgencyScam Alert: Gift Card “Draining” Scam There is a scam targeting residents throughout Southern California called gift card “draining.” Unfortunately, Moorpark residents have also reported being victims of this scam. There are two main ways thieves can steal your money in this scam. The first method is where the scammer buys a gift card, then attaches the barcode from their card over the barcode on a new gift card on the display rack. When the victim takes the new card to the cashier and loads money onto the card, the money is actually loaded onto the scammer’s gift card, since the scammer’s barcode is attached over the top of the victim’s barcode. The second method is where the scammer steals the information (barcode number and PIN) from a new gift card on the rack and waits for the victim to load funds onto the card. As soon as funds are loaded onto the card, the scammer transfers the money to their own card or account. In order to avoid becoming a victim of this scam, Moorpark Police Detective Sergeant Juan Ponce suggests giving an e-gift card or cash rather than a physical gift card. While you are out shopping, if you notice someone loitering at the gift card display and acting suspiciously (looking at the back side of gift cards then replacing the card, taking photos of the back of gift cards, peeling away the silver coating covering the PIN number, attaching stickers/paper to the back of gift cards, etc.), please notify a store employee and call dispatch at 805-654-9511. If you feel you may have been a victim of this scam, please call the Moorpark Police Department at 805-532-2700 for advice.10Like2

VENTURA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE / MOORPARK POLICE DEPARTMENT2+ weeks agoAgencyHikers and Bikers Beware: Thefts from Vehicles Parked at Trailheads Nice weather is upon us, so many of our residents are flocking to trailheads to hike, bike, and go horseback riding. There are many trailheads in the county areas surrounding Moorpark which are frequently used by our residents. Unfortunately, the increase in vehicles parked at the trailheads has also led to an increase in thefts from vehicles parked at the trailheads. In an effort to educate the public about this problem and combat the thefts, Moorpark PD has posted signs at several local trailheads warning residents about theft from vehicles. Please remember to always remove all valuables from your car, no matter where you park it, and make sure it is locked. If you do not want to carry your purse or other valuables with you on your hike, then please leave them at home. The same holds true anytime you park your car in a public place, whether a park, a shopping center parking lot, or the street in front of your house, to name a few. As always, please immediately report suspicious activity to dispatch by calling 911 or 805-654-9511. By working together, we can keep Moorpark a safe place to live, play, and work.14Like
